The city of Nicosia (or Lefkosia as it is known by the Turks) in the northern part of cyprus has been the capital of island since the 12th century. The city has been divided by 'the green line', although the city had originally become increasingly divided prior to the invasion. To the north is Turkish controlled Cyprus, to the south the Cypriot government. It is Europe's only divided city.

As so often is the case on Cyprus, it is the old town which draws the tourists to the city. The old town is a hotch-potch of charming architecture with pedestrian precincts, where cafes spill out onto the pavements and squares.
